DESCRIPTION: These wonderful 'sputnik' galls are caused by a cynipid wasp. They are red in colour, bear several spines and are single-chambered. Inside the chamber is a white larva which will hibernate within and leave as an adult the following spring. The gall occurs in two forms, besides being spined there is another form that can be smooth. Only the form with spines can be safely identified. The smooth form requires breeding and examination of the adult to separate from Diplolepis eglanteriae. DISTRIBUTION: Can be fairly frequent wherever the host plant is found. HABITAT: Found on the petioles, midrib or leaf blades of wild rose.
